Curating Emptiness

2FA011: Inside The White Cube 2010/11

Spatial Exercise 4: ‘Curating Emptiness’ Friday, 29 October – Friday, 5 November

Task:

• Sign up for a two period in the White Cube on sheet on Level 2 notice board.

• Prepare drawing and writing materials, including paper (no larger than A4) for continuous two hour session.

• Enter White Cube space, Art Block a couple of minutes before your appointed two hour slot begins.

• Spend two hours drawing and writing on paper in immediate response to your (aesthetic, mental, physical) experience of the space. You may produce original drawings and texts as: works in their own right; critical analyses and reflections; proposals for hypothetical installations. Feel free to set up ‘rules’ to explore before entering (e.g. change position every five minutes or stay in the same position writing a word every five minutes, etc).

• Prepare to leave the White Cube a couple of minutes before your appointed time two hour slot ends. Exit the space promptly leaving the space in excatly the condition you found it, i.e. prsitine and empty. NB: You must not leave any trace of your presence in the White Cube.

• Take your drawings and writings immediately to the Mac Suite in Art Block, scan them (saving as .jpg files) and upload them to the 2FA011 page on http://curatingemptiness.blogspot.com All work should be uploaded within 30 mins of leaving the White Cube. NB: If you need to access the Mac Suite after 5pm or on a Saturday or Sunday, you must obtain the swipe card from the Porter’s Lodge where you will need to leave your student card as a deposit until you return the swipe card.

• Once all drawings/writings have been uploaded, we will create an online ‘exhibtion’ of your work.
